Project Raksasa Doodles collaborates with Artmakr to print selected artworks on doodle notebooks

Project Raksasa Doodles collaborates with Artmakr to print selected artworks on doodle notebooks

Kuala Lumpur, September 16, 2010Project Raksasa Doodles is Squeak Art Asia’s first social art initiative to increase public participation in art and heighten art appreciation in their daily lives. The project started last August and is on-going until 5 December 2010. Artmakr recently joined in the cause and will select artworks submitted to the project to be printed on special edition Artmakr doodle notebook covers.

Squeak Art Asia chose doodling as the medium for its first social art initiative as everyone has doodled at some point in their lives.

“We want people to see that art appears everywhere around us, that any regular person is artistic in his or her own way without being an artist,” quipped Amy Leong, one of the founders of Squeak Art Asia.

In fact, doodles can sometimes have a deeper connection to what we really feel and think; because most of the time, doodles are drawn from the subconscious.

“This is a perfect collaboration as Artmakr’s products inspire people to learn, create, experience and exhibit their artwork. More often than not, a doodle can be developed into a more intricate and heavy artwork,” comments Jason Chen, Managing Director of Artmakr.

Squeak Art Asia is founded by two sisters, Amy & Cecilia Leong, with the aim of promoting the art of our local talents and to awaken the artist within every one of us through affordable artworks which will be made available at their e-shop this coming October 2010.

Artmakr was founded in 2005 by three creative entrepreneurs; brothers Jason and Alvin Chen, and artist I-Ming Goh, with the idea of meeting the middle ground in art between creative aspiration and high-end art galleries. They provide learning and creation resources through their art products and classes. Currently Artmakr's range of art products is available on their online store, www.artmakr.com/shop as well as at Czip Lee Plus at Bangsar Baru.

Through this collaboration, Squeak Art Asia and Artmakr hope to encourage public participation in Project Raksasa Doodles and possibly even hold an exhibition of all the submitted doodles. They are looking for sponsors for venue and printing, interested parties can reach them at amy@squeakartasia.com or through their facebook page: www.facebook.com/squeak.art.asia

Public can view all submitted doodles at the Squeak Art Asia’s facebook page (link above).

Printing Red Lacewinged Woman, the artist's studio, September 2010

The following (slightly edited) information and list of venues appears courtesy of Damian Kelly, General Manager, Print Council of Australia Inc.

"Each year the PCA calls for nominations and independently selects artists to produce a commissioned edition of high quality prints especially for our members. This year's judges were Thomas Middlemost, Curator, Charles Sturt University and Linda Elliott, Curator of Public Programmes, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. The prints are purchased in advance, through a mail order system.

Details of the prints are released in the September issue of IMPRINT magazine. The artist proofs of all editions are on display at venues in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney. Order Forms are made available in the September issue of IMPRINT, and members select their print (or prints) in preference order. In total there are some 300 prints for subscribers, these are allocated in order of Order Forms being received. Allocated prints are posted to subscribers at the end of November.

Numerous public art museums, schools and galleries have been long time participants of the program, and many individual collectors are now also joining. This means that it's possible to buy prints that are also being purchased by many of Australia’s well known state and regional galleries."

Each commissioned artist has produced 6 artist's proofs which were forwarded to each of the venues below on 30 August. It is recommended to check individual galleries for hours and viewing times, but the works should be on show somewhere between 10 September and 24 October. The ten prints will initially be launched at Handmark Gallery in Hobart on Friday 10th September 2010.
